Exhibition Catalogue Summer 2009
INTRODUCTION During the setting up of this year's exhibition, I was once again amazed by the variety of work on show, both from members and non members. What a privilege to view the world through so many eyes. Everyday objects and situations brought to our attention in such a way that we feel we are seeing them for the first time, and once again John Constable's words come to mind. "I never saw an ugly thing in my life, whatever the form of an object - light, shade and perspective will always make it beautiful". I hope a visit to this year's show inspires within you a fresh perspective and on behalf of the members, council and staff, I extend a warm welcome to you all at the 2009 exhibition. I am pleased to introduce and welcome three artists who make their debut as members this year after election at the AGM. They are Christine Baines, Geoff Cox and Hideyuki Sobue. It was with sadness that we learned of the death of Bryan Knutton last year. Bryan, although a relatively recent member, always took a keen interest in the activities and running of the Society. Once again, my thanks go to everyone involved in staging this exhibition which, as usual, required a Herculean effort fuelled by sticky cakes, strong tea and buckets of enthusiasm.
NON-MEMBERS' AWARDS
The Society runs a programme of awards for non-members and would like to express it's appreciation for the continued support of our existing sponsors and to welcome our two new ones. The aim of the awards is to encourage and reward excellence and innovation in both two dimensional and three dimensional media. The award for a work on paper is sponsored by Kent Valley Colour Printers, Kendal. The award for painting or two dimensional work is sponsored by Peter Tyson of Carlisle.
