Lake Artists Society A society of fine artists based in the English Lake District.

Exhibition Catalogue Summer 2017
INTRODUCTION

On behalf of the members of the Lake Artists Society I am delighted to welcome all our visitors to this, the 113th Summer Exhibition of paintings, sculptures and ceramics. Firstly, I would like to congratulate our two new members, Tracy Levine and Janette Phillips who were elected to the Society last year. Also, many thanks to Deborah Clark for all her expert assistance during her first year as our secretary, and Liz Savage who has taken on the role of exhibition supervisor.
Sadly, Patrick Cleary is stepping down from acting graphic designer for our catalogues, a post he has held for many years. Also, David Smith is retiring from the FOLAS (Friends of the Lake Artist's Society) which he has managed since its inauguration. We all send our thanks and gratitude for their endeavours in promoting the Society over the years.
It is with great sadness that we learned of the death last winter of Isobel Watson, a long standing member of the Society.
As in previous years all non-members who are exhibiting, have the opportunity to win awards. Many thanks go to our sponsors for their encouragement and generosity. The sponsors are illustrated on the next three pages. Our congratulations go to the winners. For the first time this year we need you, our visitors, to choose the best Lake District landscape in the exhibition. The result will be announced in the next FOLAS newsletter.
The Lake District has always been the inspiration for artists, musicians and poets, but casting a casual look back reveals subtle changes in observation and interpretation from generation to generation. Early artists and poets tended to portray the area in all its wild splendoun whilst later; the rural idyll held sway. However, more recently the artists' approach has become diverse in subject, medium and style, so that even though the landscape and all within it will always be something of a starting point, individual responses have thrown up some remarkable surprises and none more so than this year.
As mentioned earlier; our gratitude goes out to David Smith who has managed FOLAS, the link between the Society, artist and visitors. Phillip Hobbs has now taken on David's role and plans are being laid for even more benefits for membership. (For further information please ask at the desk or contact Philip Hobbs, The Copse, Old Hall Road.Troutbeck Bridge, Windermere, LA23 IJA). I would also like to thank all those who have helped in the preparation and the hanging of this exhibition. For those who wish to view the works on line, please visit: www.lakeartists.org.uk.
I sincerely hope you enjoy our exhibition.
