Alan Stones' paintings, drawings and prints are essentially human in their concerns. His pictures depict people and they also depict nature - but this is nature either as a metaphor for human activity or nature very much affected by man. Alan's paintings often fall into on-going series'. One such is a growing body of, often intensely felt, self portraits. Another is 'Collateral' (exhibited at Tullie House Museum, Carlisle - 2012/13).
In 1985 Alan began making lithographs after winning an award from The Gulbenkian Foundation to 'experiment in printmaking'. In the mid 1990's, after a three month residency in the vast open landscape of the Falkland Islands, his prints became much more minimal. Since then he has published a great many editions of lithographs from his printmaking studio in the Eden Valley in the heart of Cumbria.
From 1967-71 Alan studied Fine Art at St. Martin's School of Art, London. He has exhibited widely throughout Britain and Europe and his work can be seen in many public collections. Visitors to his painting and printmaking studios at Blencarn are welcome by appointment.
