Painting means many things to many people. To me it is an expression of what I see and feel. With portrait and figurative painting what I want to achieve is nothing new. As Leonardo de Vinci said 'to capture the essence of the mind' is what I want to achieve. When a subject sits for me, not only do I need to achieve a likeness, but also to put the spirit of the person down as well.

How can this be done? By putting paint on canvas in a certain way I am creating an illusion, but this is not enough. The sitters mannerisms need to be put down, their feeling of life, how they hold their body and express themselves through their body language. And of course there are those fleeting moments of a certain expression or a gesture which need to be captured.

It is these very subtle moments which really capture a person and tell so much. That is the enigmatic building up of a successful canvas, and with this one can capture the body and the spirit of the sitter.
