Ifor Freeman, elected to the Society 2007
I have no fixed pattern for working. My time spent in the studio is made up with sketching ideas on paper before finally making a decision about which of these are to be enlarged upon. Some sketches are made up with wire to see how they appear as three-dimensional forms and alternatively, they will be made up in clay. A large humber of these ideas remain as drawings to which I occasionally return, but a high percentage of the wire sketches are abandoned. Commissions for architectural work is usually site specific, meaning that the site for the sculpture and its position in or outside the building has been decided upon by the architect and his client.

Portraits, in many ways, require a different approach. They are very personal and I like to spend time talking to and getting to know the client and the sitter. This form of sculpture requires a relaxed atmosphere and an unlimited amount of time in which to see the person behind the face.
