Born 1935 in York, his childhood was spent in close contact with the countryside, which gave him a strong feeling for landscape and wildlife in particular. This has been a continuing theme, which is still evident in his painting today. His early training was at York School of Art, where he was strongly influenced by a tradition of attention to drawing and draughtsmanship, and further by the tradition of architectural painting in York, following such people as Patrick Hall, Alfred Gill and Henry Rushbury. Other heroes have been Whistler, Winslow Homer, Sickert, Brangwyn, Edward Seago, the Scottish Colourists and the Glasgow Boys. As a lifelong member of RSPB, his consuming interest in ornithology has led him to sketch and illustrate birds in landscape, particularly estuarine species. This interest has now led him to live at the edge of the splendid Solway estuary on the Cardurnock peninsula. This environment gives him much of the material for painting that he needs: wide skies, light on water, sunshine and storms over the marshes, cattle and watermeadows, marshland farms and villages. As a painter much influenced by the open landscapes and the flat lands of the East Coast and the Solway Plain, he frequently indulges in forays to East Anglia, North Yorkshire and Scotland in his motorhome cum studio, where this gypsy-like existence enables him to paint in front of his chosen landscapes. John has been a member of the Lake Artists Society since 1981 and has primarily exhibited in the north, with very occasional forays to the Mall Galleries in London. His paintings hang in the permanent collections of Carlisle's Tullie House, Whitehaven Museum and Art Gallery, Beverley Art Gallery and in many private collections throughout the country and abroad. John can be reached at his studio overlooking Campfield Marsh on the Inner Solway.
