Martin became a member of the LAS in 1970. Though his work is largely concentrated around the Cumbrian lakes and fells, he also likes to explore the British landscape in general and has made frequent painting trips abroad.
One of his favourite locations when away from the Lakes is the extraordinary city of Venice which he has visited many times over the years.
“Wherever I happen to be, whether it’s a remote corner of the Lake District or further afield in some busy urban metropolis, I find I’m constantly searching out painting subjects.
Whether it’s a bustling city street scene or an expansive rural landscape, I often find inspiration in unexpected places. As in the case of these two paintings it can sometimes be triggered by the simple effect of street reflections after heavy rainfall, or by the interesting play of light on ancient buildings in strong sunlight.”
