We make paintings and drawings for all sorts of reasons but primarily because they can be an exciting challenge.
Since leaving art school (St. Martins, London in 1971) Alan has worked full-time as a self-employed artist – more than fifty years at it!
Perhaps not surprisingly, given the relentless nature of self-employment, a concern of Alan’s and consequently an occasional theme in his work, is ‘human endeavour’.
In his minimal lithographs people are often climbing steep hillsides and in his oil paintings too, walking is a recurring theme.
Alan has exhibited widely, including UK-wide touring solo exhibitions, a residency on the Falkland Islands and, since 2017, three large solo exhibitions in public galleries in Cumbria. In 2018 Alan became a Patron of Printfest, the superb artist-led annual printmaking festival based in Ulverston, Cumbria.
